Lea Garner Runs Away With Mary Lou Baker Open Championship at Talons Cove
Lea Garner started the final round of the Mary Lou Baker Open Saturday with a slim one shot lead over Women’s State Am champion Julie McMullin and Karen Killpack and only two shots ahead of Kelsey Chugg and at the turn it was still a suspenseful contest. However, Garner started the back nine with a birdie and gradually widened the gap with very steady play and won the title by a comfortable eight shots and a fulfilling final round of one over par 73. It was the best score of the final day by five shots.
When it appeared that it was just a matter of time for Garner to claim the title Karen Killpack inserted some excitement into the final group by sinking an eagle on the par four 12th hole, but that proved to be her last hurrah.
McMullin and Chugg finished in second place and Killpack finished fourth.
It was an outstanding tournament on the well conditioned and beautiful Talons Cove golf course.
