Utah Golf - Hicks Goes 1-Under in Final Round at Pac-12 Championships

BOULDER, Colo. – The Utah men's golf team wrapped up its 2016-17 season with a 12th place finish at the 2017 Pac-12 Championships at Boulder Country Club.
 
Brutal weather conditions, which included nearly five inches of snow fall late Friday night, forced the championship event to just three rounds and a total of 54 holes. The championship was originally scheduled to go four rounds and 72 holes.
 
This marks the first time the Pac-12 Championship was limited to just 54 holes since Utah became a member of the league in 2011.
 
Senior Gentry Hicks registered Utah's lone round under par on the week, posting a score of 1-under par (69) in Sunday's final round. The Oro Valley, Ariz., native finished the event with a combined score of 12-over par (222) and finished in a tie for 37th. Hicks is just the fourth Utah player to register a top-40 finish in a Pac-12 Conference Championship event.
 
Freshman Peyton Hastings, who was playing as Utah's No. 6 player this week, posted a three-round score of 14-over par (224) and finished in a tie for 47th, while freshman Mitchell Schow finished in a tie for 57th with a score of 16-over par (226).
 
Freshman Jordan Costello and sophomore Nathan Wunderli finished in a tie for 61st place as both players combined to card scores of 18-over par (228). Sophomore Kyler Dunkle rounded out scoring for the Utes, finishing in 71st with a score of 23-over par (233).
 
In a tournament that featured three top-10 teams and a total of six teams ranked among the top-40, according to GolfStat.com, No. 7-ranked Oregon came away team champions with a score of 15-over par (354-361-350=1,065). No. 4-ranked Stanford (+18) finished in second just three strokes back of the Ducks, while both No. 31 Washington (+32) and No. 1 USC (+32) finished in a tie for third place.
 
“It was nice to see Gentry play better today,” said Utah head coach Garrett Clegg. “We got closer as a team, but as a whole it wasn't a great performance. It is a disappointing way to end our season.”
 
Despite the finish on Sunday, Utah still managed to have one of its better seasons in recent memory. The Utes totaled a program-best five top-three finishes, while collecting seven top-10 individual performances.
 
Hicks and Costello both recorded hole-in-ones on the season, while Wunderli became the first Ute to record two hole-in-ones in the same season. Wunderli recorded an ace in second-round action this past Friday and Utah was one of just three players to register two eagles as a team this week.
